Jennifer EUGÈNE: A Pen in Service of Humanity

Jennifer EUGÈNE was born in Port-au-Prince on May 1st, 1995. She is an author and lawyer by training, and she skillfully combines her two passions: the defense of human rights and writing. From a young age, she found shelter and refuge in words, offering solace against a world that is often too chaotic and difficult. While other young people of her age shared their lives out loud, she immersed herself in her own universe, that of writing. At the age of fourteen, writing became for her more than just a hobby: it became a means of finding inner peace, overcoming struggles, and understanding herself. It was in this context that she found her true vocation.

Writing, A Therapeutic Act

For Jennifer, writing is not just a creative act, but a way of discovering and rebuilding herself. "Poetry helps me discover myself," she confides. Thus, writing became a way for her to create her own world, a way to transcend personal difficulties and find answers to inner questions. By choosing to write, she discovered that it was writing that had chosen her. This path allows her to express herself, share her experiences, and find herself in a world where she can better understand her emotions, pains, and the complexities of human existence. Writing can also be a need or a desire, depending on the circumstances. Sometimes, writing is a therapeutic act, a necessity that emerges in the face of pain or loneliness.

Sekous Kè: A Book Born from Grief

Her book Sekous Kè is her second, published by the Csimon Publishing house in the United States. According to her, this book came to life after a difficult period of mourning. In other words, this book represents a form of therapy, a way to overcome loss and put words to the deepest pains. The publication of this collection is even more significant as it was supported by Csimon Publishing, a publishing house that played a key role in spreading her voice. Thanks to Csimon Publishing, Sekous Kè can hope to reach a larger audience, allowing Jennifer’s work to find a place in contemporary Haitian literature.

A Remarkable First Success

The success of Siwo lamou, her first book at the first edition of the Port-au-Prince Book Fair, where it became a bestseller, was a moment of great pride for her. This success marked an important step in her journey, that of a female author evolving in a society often dominated by patriarchal structures.

Sekous Kè: An Emotional Journey

Sekous Kè continues from the first, addressing profound and universal themes such as sadness, grief, absence, emptiness, and loneliness. These themes resonate with many people, as they touch on human realities that everyone faces at some point in life.

A Social and Feminist Commitment

In addition to her literary work, Jennifer EUGÈNE is an advocate for the rights of the oppressed. A lawyer by training, she actively fights for the protection of widows, orphans, and marginalized people, while also engaging in feminism, where she is a member of a feminist organization. Her commitment aims to denounce social injustices and use words, alongside her legal knowledge, as a means of struggle and comfort for her community.

The Monferrier Dorval Chair of Constitutional Law, a gesture from the State University of Haiti, for the preservation of the memory of Professor Dorval

The Monferrier Dorval Chair of Constitutional Law is a high-intellectual-intensity initiative, taken by the State University of Haïti (UEH), through the leadership of its rectorate, in agreement with the leaders of the Faculty of Law and Economics (FDSE). The initiative’s primary goal is to honor and perpetuate the memory of the valiant and brilliant Professor Monferrier Dorval, assassinated in unclear circumstances, about three years ago. And in order to make a scientific contribution to the great debate that has been going on in Haitian society for about ten years about the need to change or not, the constitution of March 29, 1987, amended on May 11, 2011. Shouldn’t we try to apply it preferably? If it needs to be changed, should this change be radical, otherwise what should it have in terms of change within a new mother law for a better institutional organization of Haiti. The chair is scientifically chaired by Professor Henri Marge. Dorléans, (current head of AFPEC), and is vice-chaired by the dean of the faculty of law and economics, Me Eugène Pierre Louis. The Chair is materialized by a set of conferences and debates (15 in total), which take place in the premises of the Office of the Protection of the Citizen OPC, under the name of Wednesday of the Monferrier Dorval Chair. It is in this sense that for the fifth edition of the Wednesday of the chair (which took place this Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at the OPC, in the presence of the protector of the citizen, Me Renan Hédouville), attention was placed on education within the debate surrounding the possible development of a new constitution for Haiti. This 5th meeting took place under the theme of: "Education, Teaching, Research, Science and Technologies". The conference was hosted by three greats of the Haitian intellectual community, including two eminent professors of the UEH, namely, Professor Odonel Pierre Louis, academic director of the École normale supérieure (ENS); the vice rector of the UEH, Professor Jacques Blaise. Their interventions were followed by that of the director of the national institute of vocational training (INFP) Mr. Dikel Delvariste.

Launch of the Engagement Award: An Initiative to Honor and Encourage Young Leaders in Haiti

August 29, 2025, will mark two exceptional events: the eighth anniversary of Pierre Marc BAPTISTE’s commitment as a young leader and social and political activist, and the official launch of the Engagement Award. This unique initiative aims to honor and encourage young leaders, professionals, and academics for their dedication and active involvement in community life. The Engagement Award’s mission is to recognize youth leadership, promote civic engagement, and highlight inspiring role models capable of positively influencing an entire generation. Through this award, Pierre Marc BAPTISTE hopes to encourage young people to get involved in concrete actions aimed at solving community problems, reducing social inequalities, and strengthening civic participation. The first edition will be particularly symbolic. Eight young leaders from the Cité Soleil plain will be honored for the social and community impact of their initiatives. In a concrete gesture of solidarity and knowledge sharing, 200 books will also be donated to the Duvivier High School library in Cité Soleil, contributing to the education and training of future generations. With this award, Pierre Marc BAPTISTE reaffirms his belief that youth engagement is an essential lever for social and political change in Haiti. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate those who are taking action to transform their community, while inspiring other young people to follow the path of action and leadership. On August 29, 2025, Haitian youth will be honored, and a new tradition of recognition and inspiration will be established to promote civic engagement and responsibility throughout the country.
