Slice each breadfruit lengthwise.
Place a large pot on the stove and add the breadfruit. Add salt and cook until tender.
Using a mortar and pestle, mash these tender, cooked breadfruits while they are still warm until smooth. Meanwhile, dip the pestle in hot water occasionally.
Once thoroughly mashed and combined, roll them into a ball or cake and serve with your desired soup.
You can serve the tonm-tonm with a savory stew or sauce, such as a legume, broth, or meat or seafood dish.

KOJES is a non-profit youth association founded in November 2020 in Cité Soleil, the largest slum in Haïti and the Caribbean. From its inception, KOJES has been committed to promoting education, culture, and training through various initiatives. One of its flagship projects is a space for social and cultural debate that has allowed many young people to meet and discuss social issues. Although the clashes that resumed in Cité Soleil in September 2022 temporarily halted this section, KOJES was able to recover by launching the KOJES letter-writing competition, aimed at reestablishing this precious connection between young people through literature. Today, the association is embarking on a new challenge with the Jèn Soley Festival, which will take place from September 20 to 22, 2025, under the evocative theme: "Saying to Exist." Among the guests participating in this festival are the renowned Lyonel Trouillot, the talented poet Carl Henry Burrin, the young slam poet Pacôme Emmanuel, the novelist Louis Bernard Henry, the poet Inima Jeudi, and the young poet Adlyne Bonhomme.

The second edition of the Port-au-Prince Book Fair is scheduled for Friday, December 13, 2024, at the premises of the French Institute in Haiti, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. "Politics, dictatorship and literature in Haiti" is the theme chosen for this second edition. "We chose this theme because of the senior authors who should be with us for this edition. These themes are very present through their works," Emmanuel Pacorme, general coordinator of the organization behind the fair, told us. Originally from Bainet and raised in Petit-Goâve, Haiti, Emmanuel Joseph embodies one of the rising figures of the Haitian intelligentsia. A jurist, ethicist, and Ph.D. candidate in philosophy at the University of Sherbrooke (Canada), his journey reflects a rigorous commitment to justice, human rights, and critical thinking. Local Roots, Global Outlook Educated in Haiti’s public and religious schools, Emmanuel Joseph began his intellectual path at the Apostolic School of Petit-Goâve, then excelled at the Lycée Faustin Soulouque. His grades, consistently between 8 and 9 out of 10, demonstrated remarkable discipline and rigor from an early age. His university education began at the Faculty of Ethnology (FE) and the Faculty of Law and Economics (FDSE) of the State University of Haiti, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in November 2013. His academic profile sharpened in Canada, especially at the University of Quebec in Rimouski (UQAR), where he completed a master’s degree in philosophy/ethics in 2020, before pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Sherbrooke, focusing on a broad yet fundamental theme: humanitarian action as experience.
In the late 18th century, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) was a prosperous French colony, producing much of the world’s sugar and coffee through the forced labor of African slaves. This wealth was based on a brutal plantation system, where slaves endured inhumane living conditions. Social tensions were high, exacerbated by racial inequality and the violent repression of slaves by the colonists. In the face of this oppression, slaves never stopped resisting. Maroons, escaped slaves, led attacks on plantations and maintained pockets of resistance in the mountains. The French Revolution of 1789, with its ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, also resonated among the slaves of Saint-Domingue, awakening aspirations for emancipation.

First black nation to free itself from slavery and gain independence from France in 1804 and influenced other liberation movements around the world, inspiring struggles for freedom and equality.
