KOJES is a non-profit youth association founded in November 2020 in Cité Soleil, the largest slum in Haïti and the Caribbean. From its inception, KOJES has been committed to promoting education, culture, and training through various initiatives. One of its flagship projects is a space for social and cultural debate that has allowed many young people to meet and discuss social issues. Although the clashes that resumed in Cité Soleil in September 2022 temporarily halted this section, KOJES was able to recover by launching the KOJES letter-writing competition, aimed at reestablishing this precious connection between young people through literature. Today, the association is embarking on a new challenge with the Jèn Soley Festival, which will take place from September 20 to 22, 2025, under the evocative theme: "Saying to Exist." Among the guests participating in this festival are the renowned Lyonel Trouillot, the talented poet Carl Henry Burrin, the young slam poet Pacôme Emmanuel, the novelist Louis Bernard Henry, the poet Inima Jeudi, and the young poet Adlyne Bonhomme.
Joseph-Auguste Anténor Firmin was born on October 28, 1850 in Cap-Haïtien, in a Haïti recently emancipated from the colonial yoke, he died on September 19, 1911 at the age of 60 in exile. He is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic intellectual figures of his time. His life, marked by an exceptional career in the political, literary and diplomatic fields, illustrates the genius of a Haitian intellectual whose contributions have left an indelible mark on history.
Vertières is the place where history’s light shines brightly. The war that led to the independence of the first black republic in the world, Haiti, spanned several decades. Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who proclaimed the victory on January 1, 1804, was a man who cleverly capitalized on the honorable legacy left by Toussaint Louverture at the head of this struggle for the first liberation of a black people in the Americas. The Battle of Vertières took place in the northern outskirts of Saint-Domingue, the name of Haïti under the yoke of slavery, near the current commune of Limbé. Under a pouring rain, mixing the mud with the blood of the freedom fighters represented by Dessalines’ indigenous army, on November 18, 1803.
On Thursday, May 15, 2025, the Karibe Hotel hosted the launch conference of the 4th edition of the national essay contest organized by Centre Muse Haïti. The event was attended by members of the Centre, including Father Gilbert Peltrop, contest coordinator, Mr. Arnold Antonin, special guest of this edition, as well as representatives from institutions such as the Ministry of National Education, represented by Emmanuel Bernard speaking on behalf of Minister Antoine Augustin; the OPC; the State University of Haiti, represented by Rector Dieuseul Prédélus; LONAPÉ, represented by Mr. Hervé Boursiquot; the Ombudsman Me Wilner Morin; and representatives of the UNDP, BINUH, and UNESCO, represented respectively by Mr. Xavier Michon, Armor BouBarkri (on behalf of Ms. Maria Isabel Salvador), and Ms. Erica Francillon Célestin (on behalf of Mr. Éric Voli Bi), partners of Centre Muse in this initiative. Members of the press were also present.
Sandra Dessalines is a self-taught Haitian painter, sculptor, and visual artist. She was born in Port-au-Prince but grew up in the commune of Carrefour. Today, she is an ambassador who brings Haitian culture to life through her art all over the world, particularly in France, where she has lived for more than a decade. An Honorable Journey Sandra Dessalines trained as an agricultural engineer at Quisqueya University in Port-au-Prince and continued her studies at INSA in Toulouse, France. Her official entry into the world of art came after the devastating earthquake that ravaged her homeland, Haiti, on January 12, 2010. This event pushed her towards art, allowing her to reach the level she occupies today. In terms of recognition, Sandra Dessalines has made a name for herself, with her original style, inspired by her native Haiti, gaining increasing recognition from major event organizers in Paris. In October 2024, she even received the public prize at Lmh Concept Events Art and Design for their 10th anniversary in Paris. This award perfectly reflects the originality of her work and her ability to touch people’s hearts through her creation.
The Port-au-Prince Book Fair is a literary initiative of the cultural organization Port-au-Prince Book Fair (OCSLP), based on the desire to promote Haitian culture in general, with a particular focus on literature. Originally from Bainet and raised in Petit-Goâve, Haiti, Emmanuel Joseph embodies one of the rising figures of the Haitian intelligentsia. A jurist, ethicist, and Ph.D. candidate in philosophy at the University of Sherbrooke (Canada), his journey reflects a rigorous commitment to justice, human rights, and critical thinking. Local Roots, Global Outlook Educated in Haiti’s public and religious schools, Emmanuel Joseph began his intellectual path at the Apostolic School of Petit-Goâve, then excelled at the Lycée Faustin Soulouque. His grades, consistently between 8 and 9 out of 10, demonstrated remarkable discipline and rigor from an early age. His university education began at the Faculty of Ethnology (FE) and the Faculty of Law and Economics (FDSE) of the State University of Haiti, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in November 2013. His academic profile sharpened in Canada, especially at the University of Quebec in Rimouski (UQAR), where he completed a master’s degree in philosophy/ethics in 2020, before pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Sherbrooke, focusing on a broad yet fundamental theme: humanitarian action as experience.
The Monferrier Dorval Chair of Constitutional Law is a high-intellectual-intensity initiative, taken by the State University of Haïti (UEH), through the leadership of its rectorate, in agreement with the leaders of the Faculty of Law and Economics (FDSE). The initiative’s primary goal is to honor and perpetuate the memory of the valiant and brilliant Professor Monferrier Dorval, assassinated in unclear circumstances, about three years ago. And in order to make a scientific contribution to the great debate that has been going on in Haitian society for about ten years about the need to change or not, the constitution of March 29, 1987, amended on May 11, 2011. Shouldn’t we try to apply it preferably? If it needs to be changed, should this change be radical, otherwise what should it have in terms of change within a new mother law for a better institutional organization of Haiti. The chair is scientifically chaired by Professor Henri Marge. Dorléans, (current head of AFPEC), and is vice-chaired by the dean of the faculty of law and economics, Me Eugène Pierre Louis. The Chair is materialized by a set of conferences and debates (15 in total), which take place in the premises of the Office of the Protection of the Citizen OPC, under the name of Wednesday of the Monferrier Dorval Chair. It is in this sense that for the fifth edition of the Wednesday of the chair (which took place this Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at the OPC, in the presence of the protector of the citizen, Me Renan Hédouville), attention was placed on education within the debate surrounding the possible development of a new constitution for Haiti. This 5th meeting took place under the theme of: "Education, Teaching, Research, Science and Technologies". The conference was hosted by three greats of the Haitian intellectual community, including two eminent professors of the UEH, namely, Professor Odonel Pierre Louis, academic director of the École normale supérieure (ENS); the vice rector of the UEH, Professor Jacques Blaise. Their interventions were followed by that of the director of the national institute of vocational training (INFP) Mr. Dikel Delvariste.

After gaining its freedom, the country was forced to pay France a considerable sum in compensation for losses associated with the abolition of slavery. This debt has been a major economic burden for Haïti, hindering its development. Additionally, foreign interference continues to create significant challenges. External political and economic interventions have often contributed to the country’s instability, hindering its ability to build a sustainable future for its citizens. b~In conclusion~b Haïti remains a country of multiple riches, but its challenges persist. Despite its natural beauty, rich culture and fascinating history, the nation needs enlightened international support and lasting solutions to overcome the obstacles that stand in its way.
