Timoun se Moun: A poetry competition to promote children’s rights in Haiti

A wounded country. Bent under the weight of a multidimensional crisis. Widespread violence. Hope slammed shut. A sacrificed generation. Children are increasingly threatened. They are increasingly confronted with all forms of vulnerability that hinder their overall development. ACTIF is launching the second edition of the "Timoun se Moun" poetry competition. A citizen initiative in which the organization uses writing as a springboard to build what life deprives Haitian children of. Pain can be turned into gold. For ACTIF (Community Action for Transformation and Formal Integration), poetry is a philosopher’s stone. Not only for this organization, but also for all those who believe that writing can help rekindle the stars. Faced with this urgent need for action, this is "an initiative to raise awareness, denounce, and affirm loud and clear that every child matters, every child deserves protection, hope, and a future," reads the competition’s descriptive document. So what do you intend to do with your human light? Through this competition, participants have the opportunity to engage in an act of resistance, like a cry of conscience to raise the voice of broken childhoods. Open from May 18 to June 18, "Timoun se Moun" is open to all Haitians living in the country and aged 18 and over. Texts must be submitted in Creole. Behind this initiative, ACTIF intends, on the one hand, to affirm our cultural and linguistic identity, and on the other, to enrich our Creole literature, promote it, and encourage creativity in our vernacular. The text must not exceed 500 words. The format chosen is PDF, Times New Roman font, size 12, and 1.5 line spacing. This competition aims to offer a touch of affection to these children who are the first victims of the country’s descent into hell. To evaluate the literary quality and essence of the submitted texts, a jury is composed of Ruthza Paul, Douglas Zamor, and Darly Renois. The former is a physician and winner of the first edition of this competition. The other two work in the fields of sociology, psychology, and literature. In addition to the "Jury Prize: 15,000 HTG + books + certificate" and "Audience Prize: 5,000 HTG + certificate + books" prizes, the best texts will be included in an anthology to be published by Éditions Répérages. It should be noted that there will be one winner for each prize. This initiative reflects ACTIF’s commitment to honoring authors who embrace the cause of underprivileged children while enriching Haiti’s literary heritage. This competition extends a helping hand to all those who believe that through poetry, one can transform one’s life into a masterpiece. At the same time, it offers the opportunity to contribute to ACTIF’s child protection program. Each participant may submit a single text. Moïse François: A young Haitian journalist committed to literature and social development

Moïse François is a young Haitian journalist, poet and law student at the State University of Haiti. He was born on November 13, 1999 in Port-au-Prince and is the eldest of a family of three children. He grew up between his hometown and Camp-Perrin, a small town in southern Haiti. Moïse François is a young Haitian with a remarkable academic and professional background, showing a deep passion for literature, journalism, social commitment and justice. He embodies this type of dynamic young person that the thirst of any great human society demands. Moïse claims above all to be a surveyor of the countries of his read books. "Literature, the kind that sets free, is my first home. I frequented Prague under the Soviet occupation of Milan Kundera, thanks to its literature, much better than some corners of Port-au-Prince, my hometown, largely plunged into horror and constant fear," he says. His great literary culture has largely contributed to his open-mindedness, his survival in this country and his impressive creativity.

A 100% Lakay Pap Jazz for 2025

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the Haïti Jazz Foundation officially announced the launch of the 18th edition of Pap Jazz during a press conference with festival partners, such as the Canadian Embassy, represented by H.E. Mr. André François Giroux, the French Embassy represented by H.E. Mr. Antoine Michon, the Spanish Embassy represented by H.E. Mr. Marco Peñin Toledano, and the Mexican Embassy, represented by Mr. Jesús Cisneros, Chargé d’Affaires ad hoc of Mexico in Haiti. The Bank of the Republic of Haiti, represented by Mr. Rotchild Jean François Junior and Mrs. Stéphanie St Louis from the Direction of Artistic and Literary Creation, Ministry of Culture and Communication, Mr. Joel Widmaier, Artistic Director of the festival, along with the General Director of the Haïti Jazz Foundation, took the time to explain the details of this 18th edition, including the logistical complexities involved in organizing the festival this year due to the country’s precarious security situation. This edition will take place from March 20 to 22, 2025, across four venues: Quartier Latin, the Brazil-Haïti Cultural Center, the French Institute in Haiti, and the Karibe Hotel.

Carrefour: Kay Jèn Yo s’ouvre aux enfants

Dans le cadre du programme de promotion des droits et de l’épanouissement de l’enfant "Timoun se moun" piloté par l’organisation Action Communautaire de Transformation et d’Intégration Formelle (ACTIF), Kay Jèn Yo organise, du 18 au 24 août 2025 (9h am - 1h pm), "Espas Lajwa", un camp d’été qui cible trente (30) enfants de 7 à 15 ans. Une grande panoplie d’activités éducatives, créatives et ludiques sont programmées pour le plus grand bien des enfants. Ils auront droit à des ateliers de : peinture, crochet, macramé, langue des signes, théãtre, lecture, échec, etc. Dans un contexte aussi traumatogène où la violence est monnaie courante, de telles initiaves sont d’une importance capitale. " Les enfants ne sont pas imperméables au stress et autres pathologies que peut provoquer la situation morbide qui sévit dans le pays actuellement", souligne Blondy Wolf Leblanc (Gabynho) DG a.i de ACTIF. "Espace Lajwa se veut donc, un refuge, un lieu où les enfants peuvent s’exprimer en toute sécurité, un espace sécurisant où ils peuvent exprimer leurs émotions à travers plusieurs médiums", précise-t-il. Plus loin, l’animateur socioculturel encourage d’autres structures à travers le pays à prendre des initiatives de ce genre au bénéfice de la santé mentale des enfants. Espas Lajwa est quasiment gratuit. Un frais de participation de 150 gourdes est requis pour la semaine. Quid Kay Jèn Yo Issu du projet "Pran Swen Tèt ou", Kay Jèn Yo est un projet de l’organisation ACTIF supporté par La Perfection École de Haute Couture visant à combattre la violence par l’engagement communautaire à travers des programmes de formation professionnelle et artistique.
