### The Start of the Voyage
This is a story never told before, taking place shortly after the dawn of the twenty‑first century. It unfolds on the island of Hispaniola, in real locations steeped in legend, where the sea holds secrets revealed only to those who know how to listen.
Five young fishermen lived there, working side by side to provide for their families. They were inseparable friends:
- **Vini:** the thinker, who read the stars and understood the language of the wind.
- **Siladi:** arms strong as ancient roots, able to bear the weight of fate itself.
- **Bobibo:** the quietest of them all, gifted with a deep sensitivity that connected him to the unseen world.
- **Guerlain and Bebeto:** brothers of the Robert family, bound by blood and courage, never apart on land or water.
One night they set out earlier than usual. They departed at 3:00 a.m., walking along the northern coast at Bord de Mer de Limonade. They passed the church of Saint Philomena, crossed the mist, and reached the shore. Together they climbed into their canoe and paddled eastward along the Atlantic coast, toward the waters near the neighbouring country.
That day they did not follow their usual route. The sea called them elsewhere to a forgotten corner where history and myth become one.
### The Meeting at Puerto de la Isabela
By 4:00 a.m. they reached the waters of Puerto de la Isabela. There, the movement of their craft woke something that had long slept in the deep.
Centuries before, in 1496, this very spot had witnessed a tragedy: here the mighty cacique Caonabo, the greatest warrior of the island, was cast into the waves and vanished forever. Since then the sea has kept that memory, and in its depths dwells **Wana** the Mistress of the Waters. To human eyes she looks no older than eighteen, yet she has lived beneath the waves for thousands of years, where time flows differently or simply stands still. Clothed in roots and seaweed, she is neither mermaid nor ancient goddess: she is the living spirit of those waters, guardian of a hidden sanctuary.
At her awakening the wind shifted sharply. A giant whirlpool rose, opening a chasm all around them. Waves roared and the canoe spun out of control. Fear seized them:
“We’re going to die!” cried Vini and Siladi, as the water threatened to swallow them whole.
“God save us, we are innocent!” called brothers Guerlain and Bebeto, clinging to the wood.
Only Bobibo, though trembling and weeping, felt a melody rising in his chest not his own, but born from the air itself. He began to sing, and the others, understanding that only humility could save them, joined in the chorus.
### The Chant That Calmed the Sea
That simple, heartfelt song touched Wana’s hardened heart. Here it is, expanded to carry the full emotion of the moment:
> *“When I walk on dry land, I am surrounded by good and faithful friends people I love.*
> *But when I step into the water, down to the deep open sea,*
> *I can rely on no one but my faith and my hope.*
> *Mistress Wana! Lady of the waters, queen of the oceans, light that guides my way.*
> *Free us from this anguish, still the whirlpool, quiet the wind that seeks to destroy us.*
> *Come to us, Wana, hear our cry we come not to harm your home.*
> *We are but children of this land, seeking our daily bread beneath your vast sky.”*
They sang it again and again, and slowly the fury died down. The whirlpool steadied, thunder rolled away, and mist lifted. Before them, walking upon waters that seemed to bow at her feet, stood Wana. She was beautiful and terrible; her dress of wild nature gleamed in the pale light of dawn.
“I am Wana,” she spoke in a voice like a thousand ripples “This is my home, my sanctuary. Never return here without respect, and the sea shall always be your friend.”
She let them fill their nets with a catch greater than any they had ever known. And so, as the sun rose, they began their triumphant journey home.
### The Legend That Crossed Borders
They reached their village at 6:00 a.m., loaded with treasure and a tale no one would believe were it not for what happened next. The roar of that night had been so loud it reached the ears of then‑president René Préval. Soldiers came for them and brought them before the authorities, demanding to know what had caused the sea to surge so high it flooded people’s homes.
Vini stepped forward first. He told everything without omission: the whirlpool, the apparition, the chant, and the old story of Caonabo. Hearing him, the governor understood they had lived through something sacred. Instead of punishment, he gave them honours. They were proclaimed **universal symbols and national heroes**. For seven days the whole island feasted and celebrated, remembering that the greatest strength is not violence, but respect and the willingness to listen to what the world tries to tell us.
To this day their story travels across the Caribbean, teaching that even the most terrifying forces can become protectors if you know how to sing with your whole heart.
